Welcome to the website of Monk Fryston Time Team was developed with the help of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of our exciting 2 year project
Finding Fryston: Discovering our heritage from the Monks to the Victorians
The project started in May 2015 with an exciting excavation in the grounds of Monk Fryston Hall and unexpectedly continued for a second season in 2016. Details of the dig can be found in the Monk Fryston Hall excavation and news section.
After leaving the excavation site we helped village residents excavate 8 test pits around Hillam and Monk Fryston and discovered a wide and varied range of artefacts from early medieval pottery to a post WW2 Denture Bath, and each one adding to our knowledge of local life.
Throughout 2016 our focus was to work to make sense of what we had discovered, literally to piece together some of our discoveries and a number of our volunteers have worked to do so, recreating a series of pots and bowls representing almost each century of the Project. This work continued in the first half of 2017 during which time the team created a series of reports and visual legacies which we hope residents and visitors will find interesting and enlightening in future years.
The HLF Finding Fryston Project was completed successfully in December 2017 and the very detailed Project and Excavation report will be published in late Spring 2018.
Our research work is continuing and we are conducting several other strands of enquiry into our Village History and Heritage.
Why not get involved yourself? Whether you are an experienced enthusiast or a beginner that has never done it before we would like to invite you to come along and take part in our other research activities
