Whilst new trenches had been opened and existing ones expanded last week, this week saw the public entrance taking shape. Last Thursday the old and decrepit gate to the site on Fryston Common Lane was opened for the first time in over 60 years. It has now been replaced and provides a safe access for volunteers and visitors away from the hurly burley of the village square and the very busy A63.

Two site cabins then arrived and were expertly manoeuvred over the 10ft wall and between the trees into position. These will provide secure storage and a mess room. These were followed by toilets and on Friday a temporary water supply. Tools which had been borrowed from North Duffield and Pontefract and District archaeological societies arrived and were assembled. We were just about ready for business on time… and for our Village Summer Fayre… and then it started raining!
It’ll be alright on Monday – we said optimistically!
