The whole of the community of Monk Fryston and Hillam was gripped with Tour de Yorkshire fever last weekend and every bit of rain cover which could be found was requisitioned into use just in case and that included the three marquees which were being used as shelter from the weather at the dig.
As it is a relatively short distance from the Monk Fryston Hall to the event site at the community centre it was decided to ‘walk’ the marquees from one site to the other rather than dismantle and reassemble them. The marquees were destined for a different type of tour carried by groups of volunteers.

Whilst the distance is short the route does have one major hurdle to overcome twice, crossing the A63 by the blind bend by the thatch cottage and negotiating both water lane and the hall gates with inches to spare problem, not to mention the odd motorist who happily passed under the marquees as they made their serene journey between sites.
We are very pleased to report that all 6 journeys were made without incident but unfortunately they were needed at le tour because the weather was showery, so it was a job well done and certainly was an experience which volunteer archaeologists will probably never be asked to do again.
