After a late finish on Sunday clearing up and drying out after the Summer (?) Fayre normal service is resumed in Monk Fryston and the sun is shining! A great start to the excavation and just before 9am our first volunteer Matt O’Keefe arrives to sign in, followed shortly by a stream of volunteers. After site inductions we are off and at it.
Simon our archaeologist has deployed two teams; one working under Deputy Project Manager and Trench Supervisor, Richard Cawthorne, and the other team helping Paul Harris, our Graphics Supervisor, to start taking site levels and plotting the trenches. Tea and lunch breaks bring welcome respite from the graft… and the sun …. what am I saying after yesterday’s weather? |

New Pontefract Archaeology member Phil Jones, on his first dig, has learnt his first new archaeological word whilst cleaning up trench no2, bio-turbation; we assure Phil there will be many more obscure words to learn and advise him to get a note book!
By the end of the afternoon, we make our first discovery, the outline of a ‘robbed out’ wall which we didn’t expect, and Chris has found a wonderful piece of Northern Grittyware.
A smashing start; long may it stay sunny.
